After the meeting with the commissioner to EU enlargement, Stefan Feule, the President of Byelorussia has made it understood that we cannot expect political changes in his country. Furthermore, Łukaszenko has stated that Byelorussia will not bow down before the European Union, Russia or the United States and will rather take its own road. Commissioner Feule has underlined the fact that Byelorussia could count on more concrete European aid in event that it should choose to enact a turnaround within the scope of human rights and the development of democracy. Commenting on the meeting, the Byelorussian opposition has appealed to the European Union that it might not accept to back Łukaszenko in his conflict versus Russia. According to the Russian commentators any changes in the direction of democracy are only superficial, to please Brussels.
